70 Questions pertaining to the sale of BC Rail:

1. Will the government hold a public inquiry into the sell-off of BC Rail as soon as the criminal proceedings conclude so that B.C. taxpayers can finally get the answers they deserve?

2. When did the government first learn that the BC Rail deal was the target of an in-depth RCMP investigation?

3. When will the government release all documents -- including documents which may not be directly linked to the charges -- that relate to government policies or decisions regarding BC Rail?

Time to Move Forward

The Joy of Privatization - Not

Leaving CN's track record aside and observing what happens when a large Corporation is no longer publicly accountable or bound by laws that protect the environment, let's take a look at privatization from a cold hard dollar and sense perspective. Privatizing Canada Post is not good for the private sector as it will cost them more to use their services.

Today I received a package that was sent from a friend in New York. The product and postage was already paid for. The package came COD because I had to pay GST which was not a big surprise because the same thing would have happened if the package was sent through USPS and Canada Post. The difference was the brokerage fees. Canada Customs adds on a five dollar user fee on top of the GST charges which is collected by Canada Post for them. UPS charges $50.00.

That's quite a difference. That is with UPS's law suit suing Canada under NAFTA claiming that UPS can't compete with Canada Post's prices. UPS claims that because Canada Post already has a network of first class mail, it is cost efficient for them to send courier items and they can do so faster and cheaper than the private sector. That is bizarre. That's like claiming Greyhound should not be legally permitted to ship parcels because they already have a network of busses in place. This is where the Corporate obsession becomes bizarre and common sense is removed through well meaning but poorly written trade agreements.
